Wolf Totem is a beautiful cultural flower in Chinese literature history. It has been honored as a novel which gives unique explanation about Chinese culture. Readers show their great interests towards this book and its English version was sold out immediately when first being published. The rich cultural heritage of the book is one of its attracting points.Based on Nida’s cultural theory and Liu Mingdong’s Cultural Schemata Theory, this thesis gives a detailed research on the cultural schemata in Wolf Totem, A systematic study about the categorization, translatability and translation strategies of the cultural schemata in Wolf Totem has been made in this paper.Cultural schemata in Wolf Totem can be categorized into five parts:ecology cultural schemata, material cultural schemata, social cultural schemata, religious cultural schemata and linguistic cultural schemata. According to Liu Mingdong’s theory, all these cultural schemata can be translated into another culture, and there are three principles to realize the translatability of cultural schemata. They are A-A principle, A-B principle and A-0principle. This thesis shows that despite Liu Mingdong’s three principles of cultural schemata translation, there also exist two more principles, A-C and A-D principle. These five principles are all of great importance to cultural schemata translation. Each principle has been used on certain sort of cultural schemata. These principles not only enrich the theories of cultural schemata translation, but also offer some new ways, new strategies and new thoughts for translation practices.
