A Study On Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In The English Version Of Wolf Totem From The Perspective Of Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory

Nowadays,intercultural communication has become extremely urgent.Under the circumstances,Goldblatt,an excellent translator,brings the English version of Wolf Totem to the readers of all countries and shares the spiritual feast of the Wolf Totem with the world.In the process of translation,Goldblatt not only needs to overcome the cultural barriers which is caused by culture-loaded words,but also needs to choose appropriate translation strategies.As a representative figure of the cultural translation theory,Bassnett proposes that the translation should not remain at the discourse level,but at the cultural level.This idea offers a fresh perspective on the translation theory.In view of this,this paper selects Bassnett’s cultural translation theory,with the culture-loaded words in the English version of Wolf Totem as the research objects,to analyze Goldblatt’s translation strategies and methods adopted in the English version of Wolf Totem,as well as to analyze the enlightenment of cultural translation theory on translation.The significance of this paper lies in the analysis of the translation of culture-loaded words in the English version of Wolf Totem from the perspective of Bassnett’s cultural translation theory.Through the analysis of the text,there are four findings in this paper.First,Goldblatt’s translation viewpoint coincides with Bassnett’s cultural translation theory.Both of them take cultural factors into consideration when translating,and strive to achieve cultural equivalence,and both of them take domestication as the major translation strategy.Second,if a translator wants to achieve cultural equivalence,he or she should focus on cultural factors when translating.Third,Bassnett’s cultural construction and manipulation are evident in the translation of Wolf Totem.Fourth,it is useful for the development of translation theories and practices to analyze the translation strategies and methods of culture-loaded words by Bassnett’s cultural translation theory.All in all,the enlightenment brought by Bassnett’s cultural translation theory to the translation will help translators handle the culture-loaded words of the novel and select suitable translation strategies,so as to improve readers’ reading fluency and readability and promote communication between cultures.
