With the broadcasting of A Bite of China and many other food programs, more and more foreign friends become acquainted with traditional Chinese food, what’s more, some of them covet for such delicious food. The wide spread of Chinese catering culture will greatly drive the external exchanges of Chinese traditional culture. So, the translation of Chinese menus, as a bridge of communication between Chinese food and western food, plays a very crucial role. The translation quality of Chinese menu directly affects the process of cross-cultural communication. However, if someone is careful enough, it is easy for them to find that the translation of Chinese menus is actually not very standard. What’s worse, some of the menus transmit wrong information to the foreigners, or make them confused. Under such circumstances, my adviser selects two passages concerning Chinese menus translation into English for me, for the purpose of practicing and holding the skill of translation in this field. The report is on the basis of this translation practice. There are brief introduction of the task, material analysis and preparation before translation. There is also analysis of the translation cases, including analysis of the text, the naming approach of Chinese menus, and the introduction of translation skills used in this task combining with examples. Further more, it contains my own thought and perception after translation, together with the outlook of the study and work in the future. In the end of my essay, I enclose the translated text, the original text, and the term list concerning the translation materials. I sincerely hope that the translation process, the experience, and the shortcomings concluded in my report will somewhat benefit the readers.
