| This report is based on the translation of the book Cross-cultural Communication by Larry A.Samovar and Richard E.Porter from English into Chinese. The book details the unique relationship between communication and culture and its impact on interpersonal communication. It aims to enable the students to learn cross-cultural communication, establish cross-cultural awareness and effectively improve their cross-cultural communication skills. The report consists of four parts. The first part is the description of the translation task, which mainly introduces the background of the source text and the significance of its translation. The second part is the process of the task, including pre-translation preparation, translation and proofreading. The third part is the main body of the whole report—case analysis. In this part we use the translation methods applicable to the contexts of this book in the three aspects of titles, vocabulary and sentences.Prepositions are often used in English titles. When translating titles, the translator should think about whether it is necessary to translate prepositions. It is necessary to consider the whole context to supplement the messages that are not overtly expressed in the original titles,so the titles can play the leading role fully.Inversion of word order is another key method that should be used.As for the translation of vocabulary,we choose the appropriate meaning of particular words according to their context, and sometimes according to their part of speech. In the translation of sentences,we adopt the methods such as synchronizing, reversing, and splitting. |
