Living in this information age, Chinese have been attaching more and more importance on international communication. As a result, they not only pose a higher demand on the quantity of interpreters, but also on the quality of interpreting. In the process of Chinese-English interpreting, literal translation cannot be applied to all situations. Because there are huge differences of language and culture between Chinese and English, and interpretation presents some particular features of its own, such as extemporaneousness, time limitation, etc. According to Interpretive Theory which was put forward by Danica Seleskovitch, a famous French translation theorist, interpreters should pursue the equivalence of the speakers’meaning rather than the connotation of speeches. Besides, sense unit is the minimum ingredient to help realize equivalent translation. In order to meet the criteria of being faithful to the sense of information, the interpreting procedure of interpretive theory consists of three parts:comprehension, deverbalization, and expression. By analyzing the interpreting examples of press conferences held by foreign minister Yang Jiechi during the NPC and CPPCC sessions, this article aims to study the common strategies of applying Interpretive Theory in the process of Chinese-English interpretation. |
