A Study On Communication Efficiency Of China English In The Translation Works Through The Comparison Of The Two Versions Of The English Translation Of Hong Lou Meng

China English has come along as a member of World Englishes family in cross-cultural communication. It is grammatically correct and apprehensible to English native speakers, with the distinctive Chinese accent and special wording and phrasing transferred from Chinese.Because of the close relationship between language and culture, China English is influenced by Chinese thinking pattern and Chinese culture and reflects Chinese language habits and Chinese culture honestly. It helps rectify the inequality in cross-cultural communication and defense Chinese cultural independence against western culture invasion and English linguistic imperialism.This thesis is dedicated to the study of communication efficiency of China English in translation works. Efficient communication in translation means there is no misunderstanding between readers and the author. Translators, as the media between readers and the author, are required to be loyal to the original work and at the same time guarantee the apprehensibility of the readers.Hong Lou Meng(红楼梦) as one of the greatest novels in China’s history, its English translation will be used as the subject of the study. The study will be carried through the comparison of David Hawkes and John Minford’s version and Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s version, which are considered as classic translation of this novel and are acknowledged and accepted both home and abroad. As Hawkes and Mr. Yang had different translation aims and strategies, their word choice and language styles differ. Yang’s work betrays features of China English. And by setting Hawkes’translation as a contrast, China English is more distinct. The communication efficiency of China English in Yang’s translation will be discussed in the thesis.The communication efficiency of the two books has been proved by its long-lasting popularization. As readers’apprehensibility differs among individuals, it will be set as a constant. The loyalty to the original work will be examined carefully. The analysis of the efficiency of China English in Yang’s translation will be carried on lexical level, sentence patterns and discourse features. Phrases, sentences and passages will be quoted from the two works to show what China English is and how it works to communicate efficiently to foreign readers about Chinese culture. The deeper cultural meanings of the original texts and the relationship between language and Chinese thinking patterns are explored to judge which version can convey the original meanings and cultural reference better. Through careful examination there comes the conclusion that Chinese culture is better preserved in China English and by the adoption of China English, the Yang’s translation reflects the original work better.Therefore, China English is efficient in translation works and it preserves and helps transmit Chinese culture. China English should be adopted in Chinese-English translation and cross-cultural communication.
