Literary stylistics, with its approaches and theories mainly stemming from linguistics and its purpose like that of literary criticism, is regarded as a discipline mediating between linguistics and literary criticism. It thus specializes in illustrating the thematic meanings and aesthetic values of literary texts, and focuses on linguistic choices that are thematically or artistically motivated. Since its theories and approaches are quite operable, it certainly can be a useful tool in analyzing literary works, including translated ones. By applying literary stylistics to the study of fictional translation, translators can improve their understanding of the aesthetical functions of fiction's verbal choices, particularly its subtle deviant language forms or rhetorical choices so that they will try to reproduce such stylistic features and values with language of functional equivalence or expressive identity. In addition, literary stylistics also provides the translation theorists and critics with an effective and operable approach in making contrastive studies of literary works and their translations.Hong Lou Meng (HLM for short in this thesis) by Cao Xueqin, a monumental work in the fictional history of China, is one of the outstanding representatives of brilliant Chinese culture. It is agreed by redologists and critics that one of the most important artistic characteristics of HLM is its vivid language and its "embodying diversiform styles (文备众体)" in real sense, i.e. a multiplicity of styles involved in this work, such as narration, dialogue, poetry, and chapter titles of traditional Chinese novels.
