Hong Lou Meng, a monumental work in the history of Chinese literature, is one of the outstanding representations of centuries-old Chinese culture. Involving many literary styles (types of literary creation), including narratives, dialogues, poetry, antithetical couplets, etc. it is regarded as a work of "embodying diversiform styles". This characteristic of "embodying diversiform styles" is also reflected in its traditional poetry. The beautiful poems not only form an integral part of the whole novel, but also embrace almost every aspects of Chinese traditional culture.This thesis focuses on Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang's translation of poems in Hong Lou Meng. Their translation will be analyzed from the perspectives of the reproduction of the writer's intentions and of the representation of the "three beauties". Through the analysis, the translatability of poetry and the feasibility of the theory of the "three beauties" are proved again; moreover, through comparing their translation of poetry in Hong Lou Meng with the rendering of David Hawkes, it demonstrates the manipulation of ideology and dominant poetics (social and personal) on the translator; finally the thesis puts on a study or reevaluation on their translation of poems in Hong Lou Meng in the context of intercultural communication.Besides introduction and conclusion, there are five chapters;The introduction briefly generalizes the theme and basic structure of the thesis;Chapter 1 offers a general account of this classic novel. It covers its influence both at home and abroad and the function of the poetry in this novel;Chapter 2 introduces Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang as translators and their translation of A Dream of Red Mansions. It focuses on the analysis of the reproductionof the writer's intentions;Chapter 3 discusses respectively the representation of the original beauties in sense, in sound and in form. Analyzing and assessing the conveyance of the "three beauties" involves examining the use of imagery, rhyme and rhythm and the arrangement of lines;Chapter 4 is a comparative study of the translations done respectively by the Yangs and David Hawkes. It demonstrates that different translators will adopt different strategies in transposing the same text, and that the Yangs have kept many Chinese cultural elements in their version under the influence of their subjectivities;Chapter 5 is a reevaluation of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang's translation of poems in Hong Lou Meng in the context of intercultural communication. It takes their translation as an example to show the significance of "exotic flavor" in literary translation in today's multicultural world;The conclusion is the review and summery of the whole thesis. It emphasizes the importance of keeping "exotic flavor" in literary translation to readers with intercultural communication to fulfill intercultural communication. And it is the responsibility for translators to highlight the fact that the world is multicultural not one of cultural convergence.
