Languages have fuzzy senses besides accurate senses. The complexity of human knowledge to subjective things determines fuzziness of language speech. And fuzziness is an essential characteristic of objective language and exists in natural language and speech. Fuzzy linguistics is a new developing cross-boundary subject to research and analyze fuzziness exists in natural language and speech, which employs fuzzy set theory as its basic device, and its main arguments influence many aspects greatly. Many studies on fuzzy theory were carried out in the20th century by linguists both at home and abroad, e.g., the American professor L. A. Zadeh and China’s linguist Wu Tieping, but how to apply fuzzy theory to teaching is scare and not concrete, especially for higher vocational college teaching. Besides, practice and skills are necessary at higher vocational colleges, so put theory into practice for vocational college is urgent. And higher vocational college students are mostly week in listening and reading abilities. This paper reveals the advantages of fuzzy theory and aims to show that fuzzy theory has effect on higher vocational language listening and reading teaching. As adopting fuzzy theory is a new concept and not familiar with students, it is necessary to talk about recent teaching situation first and introduce the topic of fuzzy theory next. Thus, two research questions are raised:Research question one:what do you think of the situation of higher vocational college English teaching?Research question two:Does fuzzy theory have any effect on higher vocational college English listening and reading teaching? The research undertakes a survey, an interview and an experiment. The responses of132subjects with three majors in different grades from Anhui Lvhai Vocational of Business were collected and analyzed in October,2013. Results showed the opinion students listed about the situation and problems in language teaching. After the survey, one week later,10students who behaved well in class and liked to cooperate were interviewed by the author herself, they talked about their feelings in listening and reading studies and gave suggestions for the future teaching. Then the author introduced the topic of "fuzziness" and gave an example to ask students to compare accurateness with fuzziness. Students were invited to talk about their viewpoints of the fuzziness. After two weeks, in the late of October, an experiment was conducted over60subjects of English-major freshmen to find out whether teaching under the guidance of fuzzy theory can help students to improve listening and reading abilities. The experiment lasted for three months and included the pretests and the posttests. The pretests consisted of pretest1(a listening test) and pretest2(a reading test). The posttests were made up of posttest1(a listening test) and posttest2(a reading test). In the listening tests, students were asked to record a listening part and finish ten questions. In the reading tests, students should finish5texts in40minutes. It was found that in the pretests, there were no significant differences between class one (EG) and class two (CG). But after class one received experimental teaching stage with fuzzy theory, students in class one made much progress in the posttests. However, class two students without any treatment did not improve listening and reading abilities too much.Based on the experiment, it can be concluded that using fuzzy theory has effect on higher vocational college listening and reading teachingThe paper mainly intends to call students’ and teachers’ attention of listening and reading teaching under the guidance of fuzzy theory and suggest adopting fuzzy theory to serve for higher vocational college listening and reading teaching. The findings of this study will make certain contributions not only to the theoretical studies of fuzzy linguistics but also to the practices of English teaching and learning.
