Fuzziness We Live By

With more attention paid to fuzziology, fuzzy linguisics, as a boundary discipline between linguistics and fuzziology, has also developed immensely and gradually systemized. With in-depth research on language fuzziness, people have got more comprehensive understanding on fuzziness itself and fuzzy language. Fuzziness is one of the intrinsic properties of language, therefore, the study of language is inevitably associated with that of language fuzziness and its external expressive form—fuzzy language.The further development of fuzzy linguistics is manifested in both the ontological research and the interdisciplinary applied research. Currently, the theory of fuzziology has obtained productive outcomes in many fields including mathematics, artificial intelligence, foreign language teaching and translatology, etc. The combination of fuzzy linguistics and translation studies has pioneered a new research orientation. Translation, as a transformational activity, is bound to involve the study of language. Translation is a sophisticated activity, and language fuzziness will add much difficulty to translation. Thus it's necessary to combine language fuzziness with translation so as to properly reproduce the connotation of language fuzziness in the target language.This thesis starts with the research on language fuzziness, then probes into fuzziness in translation, and lastly combines language fuzziness with literary fuzziness so as to explore the appropriate transference of literary fuzziness and the reasonable translation of fuzzy language in literary works.Except for introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is about the ontological research on language fuzziness, mainly involving the general review of previous study, the understanding of fuzziness and some controversies on the study of language fuzziness. The second chapter studies language fuzziness from multidimensional perspectives. Because fuzziness has aroused wide attention and most people have gradually identified with its existence, people show great zeal for the controversial topic-origin of fuzziness.
