The Effect Of Western Concept Of Documentary On Chinese Documentary Production

Lagging behind the western developed countries for many years, the genre and style of Chinese documentary is inevitably connected to the foreign country. The history of western documentaries experience five stages--Silent Film, Grierson Film, Direct Film, Real Film and New Documentary Film, which has corresponding effect on the development of Chinese documentary. It is found that the concept of Chinese documentary is similar to the west when looking back upon the history of Chinese documentary, for instance, the soviet-style documentaries, the feature films and so on. On the basis of this background, this paper mainly started from the phase of50’s when the Chinese documentaries sprouted to the People’s Daily life today and realized the impact of different periods more profoundly.In this paper, the research mainly has the following several aspects. First of all, study the documentary path of the western concept and explore the process about how the concept introduced broadcast and accepted in China on the basis of clear understanding of the path of the western documentary. Secondly, have a specific and in-depth analysis on the influence from the west according to the relationship between the western concept of documentary and the change of the Chinese documentary. Finally, based on the current environment of the existence and development of Chinese documentaries and after elaborate on the impact of Western ideas on China in different periods documentary, this paper is aimed to re-examine the Grierson style, reflect the concept of the Direct Film and get a complete understanding and evaluation of the New Documentary Film.By expanding and discussing above questions, I hope to describe an outline, which shows us how does the concept of Western documentary influence the creation of a documentary in China. It will not only provide a workable research path and practical reference for Chinese documentary research, but also help us grasp the rules of Chinese representation documentary development beneath the complex appearance. Once the creators grasp the connotation of making good documentary, they will promote the development of documentary creation in China.
