This dissertation describes various usages of the function word ’ZHE’ in Zongyang dialect in great details, basing on abundant spoken dialect corpus, combing with some diachronic corpus and predecessors’ research achievements. The dissertation contains seven parts.The introduction part introduces the object, target and significance of this research, the research background of this project, the research about ’ZHE’ in Zongyang dialect. We investigate the usages of ’ZHE’ in Zongyang dialect and anticipate the dissertation s help to the investigation of the transformation progress of ’ZHE’ form a verb to a function word in Contemporary Chinese. We divide the research achievements of ’ZHE’ into five categories viewed from the research perspectives: researching ’ZHE’ from ontology angle, comparing ’ZHE’ with other function words, describing ’ZHE’ in different phrases, describing ’ZHE’ in different literatures and describing ’ZHE’ in different dialects. There is not much research about Zongyang dialect and less attention is paid on some certain single word.Chapter one, the general situation of Zongyang dialect.This chapter has five parts: the general situation of the geology and history about Zongyang, the usage situation, affiliation, phonology characteristics and grammar characteristics of Zongyang dialect. Zongyang County is located in the southwest of Anhui province, north shore of Yangtze River, and in daily life people communicate in local dialect. Zongyang dialect belongs to Huang Xiao Area of Jianghuai dialect. There are19initial consonants (18consonants and1zero onset),42syllable rimes (11simple finals,17compound finals,13nasal consonants and1nasal consonant made syllables alone) There are five tones:the High and Level, the Rising, the Falling and the Entering tones. About the vocabulary and grammar, there is not much difference between Zongyang dialect and Jianghuai mandarin.Chapter two,’ZHEi [t(?)]’ used as a dynamic auxiliary in Zongyang dialect. This chapter has two parts. Part one describes the usages of dynamic auxiliary ’ZHE1’:’ZHE[t(?)]’ used for signifying perfective aspect is equal to ’LE1’ in Mandarin, meaning ’action is completed’ after verbs and ’the results has been generated’ after adjectives, and ’ZHE[tsi]’ used for signifying durative aspect is equal to ’ZHE’ in Mandarin, meaning ’an action or a certain state is continuous’. Part two summarizes the origin of ’ZHE1[tsi]’ used as dynamic auxiliaries:the verb ’ZHE’ with meaning of ’attach’.Chapter three,’ZHE2[tsi]’ used as a complementizer in Zongyang dialect. This chapter has two parts. Part one describes the usages of complementizer ’ZHE2’:used as complementizers of complement of stative, complement of degree and complement of quantity. Part two summarizes the origin of ’ZHE2[tsi]’ used as complementizer: the usage of ’ZHE’ signifying perfective aspect.Chapter four,’ZHE3[tsho55]’ used as a passive maker in Zongyang dialect. This chapter has two parts. Part one describes the usages of passive maker ’ZHE3[tsho55]’, and there are two usual sentence patterns:NP (recepient)+ZHE+NP (performer)+VP (dispose),NP (recepient)+ZHE+NP (performer)+BA+VP (dispose).Part two summarizes the origin of ’ZHE3’ used as passive maker:the ’cause’ meaning of ’ZHE’.Chapter five,’ZHE4’ and ’ZHE5’ used as modal particles in Zongyang dialect.This chapter has three parts. Part one describes the usages of modal particle ’ZHE4’ and ’ZHE5’.We describe the various modal meaning of ’ZHE’ in declarative sentence, exclamatory sentence and imperative sentence respectively. Part two summarizes the origin of ’ZHEs’ used as modal particle:the usage of ’ZHE’ for signifying durative aspect and the influence of certain sentence patterns. Part three describes the usages of ’LE [ni]’ and ’LE [nio23]’ in Zongyang dialect.Chapter six is the conclusion part. We compare the description of ’ZHE’ in Chinese Dialect Dictionary and conclude main usages of ’ZHE’ in Zongyang dialect, and think about further efforts in the future for this progect.
