The Study Of Zhang Xuecheng’ Writing Thoughts

Zhang Xuecheng is a palmary literary historian in the Qianjia period of the Qing Dynasty. For holding himself aloof from hurly-burly of politics and material pursuits, he was not recognized by the academic mainstream of his time. As a result, his achievements was buried for more than one hundred and twenty years. Through numerous studies of some scholars as Liang Qichao and Hu Shi at the beginning of1900s, his work was gradually given a high appraisal by academic circles worldwide.Among his achievements, the historical science, chorography and emendation have exerted a far-reaching influence on the later generations. He is a scholar filled with abundant experience on writing and also teaching. Zhang Xuecheng’s writing thoughts are contained in some chapters of his masterpiece, General Principle of Literature and History, in which he made a comprehensive, pervasive discussion and put forward some distinctive opinions, especially on the theory of writing, writing instruction, and the relationship among reading, writing and teaching.The essay uses General Principle of Literature and History as the research subject, and Literature Research as method. It starts from the angle of writing theory research, and relies on the researches of the experts and scholars of the last centry, in which way to review and summarize his writing thoughts.The advanced theory in the writing thoughts of Zhang Xuecheng is stressed in horizontal way, and its practical significance is discussed in vertical way. With expectation to provide a reference for the development of writing theory in modern time. This paper is consisted of five parts:the introduction part, the explaining of the researching motivation, the researching methods and status and also the background of Zhang Xuecheng. In the first chapter, it makes an allover expounding to his writing thoughts, which contains his enlightenment background and writing connotation. Especially from three angles, i.e. The succession of humanistic tradition, the struggling of learning atmosphere in Qianjia period, the infiltration of his rough experiences. The second chapter describes the essences of his writing thoughts in a few subchapters, and then summarizes his writing thoughts in a microscopic point of view on each insightful theory. The third chapter, which relies on the characteristics of Zhang Xuecheng’s writing teaching experiences, alluded to his learning psychologies and training mentalities in writing. In Chapter Four,it affirms the significances of Zhang Xuecheng’s writing ideas, and makes it as the theoretical basis that is combined with the teaching of writing, discusses how to establish the personality, cultivate a rich sense of language and color the teaching experiences in writing.In a word, Zhang Xuecheng has absorbed the essence of traditional Chinese thoughts in his writing, formed the terse unity theory, the erudite motivation theory, the diligent writing theory and honorable personality theory. These theories have positive and practical significances on constructing the writing theory system and pointing out the methods of writing the real meaningful articles.
