Research On Ocean-related Novels In The Song And Yuan Dynasties

Ocean-related Novels is a special kind of regional literature. This thesis gives a definition of "ocean-related novels" as the narrative style of novels related to ocean."Story characters, plots, or scenario involves in ocean" is the standard to select texts which include Vernacular Novels and Classical Chinese Novels. This thesis selects226pieces of Song and Yuan Dynasties’ocean-related novels as the research objects. The first chapter analyzes the oceanic culture background, the development of the pre-song ocean-related novels and their influence on Song and Yuan Dynasties’ocean-related novels to discuss the culture background. The oceanic culture background contains the understanding and using the tide disasters and the oceanic creatures, sea transportation, maritime trade, defence or warfare on the sea, seagod worship. The second chapter analyzes the content from five aspects:immortals and ghosts, people, animals, things, events related to the sea. The third chapter analyzes the artistic features from three aspects:magical and rich imagination, vivid and rich oceanic merchants images, the using of dreams. Magical imagination includes strange environments, strange appearance, strange temperament, fantasy magic arts, unusual functions, bizarre plots. Rich images includes rich types and rich points of views. This thesis analyzes these novels’skills to shape the images of the oceanic merchants. This thesis holds that the using of dreams can expand the narrative space and add the narrative capacity, express the character’s subconscious reverence toward the ocean, prolepsis to predict the future, add the romantic mood and fantastic colors. The fourth chapter analyzes how Song and Yuan Dynaties’ ocean-related novels influence the Ming and Qing ocean-related novels——in the content and artistic features.
