The History And Culture Of Deng State And Deng County In Zhou Dynasty

Deng State, one of the important vassal state of Zhou Dynasty in the south area, Was eliminated by Chu State in the early Spring and Autumn Period, than its original ruling land belonged to Chu State, called Deng County; However, in the late Warring States Period, Deng County was achieved by Qin state, and became one of the counties of Qin since then. Due to the historical records lacking some account, the history and culture of Deng state and Deng County is uncertain, which caused a lot of problems need to be solved. In this paper, the author analyzed the history and culture of Deng state and Deng County in detail in various periods on the basis of reading a large number of archaeological data and related literature.1.About Deng State’s geographical position, the author agrees with researchers like Shi Quan, Wang Xianfu and so on, who holds the view that the capital of Deng State had been located in Xiangyang since or no later than in the middle of Western Zhou Dynasty. The territory scope of Deng State was like this:eastward reached the middle-lower of Gunhe, southward arrived to Hanjiang river, bordering on Gu State in the west and reaches Xinye area in the north. In early period, Deng’s culture had a strong similarity to Zhou’s, and then it was strongly influenced by Chu culture. Deng had never got restoration since it was eliminated by Chu.2.This paper affirms the fact that Chu set up Deng County after Deng State was eliminated, and considers that Chu dealt with different types of noble of Deng County in different ways. What is more, there is no big difference about the life of the people in lower classes of Deng County compared with the people in capital of Chu. Deng County cultural connotation is generally consistent with Chu, but also have certain geographical features, which made a contribution to the development of Chu culture under some extent. Governed by Chu State, the economy of Deng County is still developed. In the late Warring States period, the "South attack Chu, arrived in Deng" launched by Han State and Wei State, occurs in Deng County; Deng County is invaded by Qin State, experienced a year of war, which causes a great damage to the local cause.3.After dominating Deng County, Qin State mainly takes two modes of management: immigration and sending officials. Because of the correct policy, Qin controls Deng County rapidly. At that time, the cultural landscape of Deng County is very complex, as a whole, Qin culture dominates, Chu culture accounts for the main body status, and is combined with the factors of Central Plain culture at the same time. The importance of Deng County mainly reflects on the traffic at this time, the road through Deng County can not only be used for march, but also for ordinary people who walk between the south and the Guanzhong.
