"A dream of Red Mansions" is the peak of Chinese classical novel, which has a profound cultural connotation and humanistic spirit. The version of1987and2010are the most influential versions among the rescreen TV plays based on the novel. This paper analyses the original novel and the two TV plays from the respect of macrolanguage, comparing them with the theory of literature and criticism, the theory of film creation and diffusion, such as narratology, reception aesthetics, etc.Firstly, starting from the category of general linguistic, languages could be divided into novel language and TV language; and as the carrier of novel and TV languages, words and images are analyzed, especially the relation and transformation between them. Combining with the production background, this paper points out different ways of dealing with the novel by two versions of TV plays, and discusses their loyalty from the perspective of conveying original novel spirit connotation.Secondly, starting from the images formed by languages, this paper has detailed comparative analysis on original novel and two versions of TV plays. Basing on the novel text, the way of dealing with language by the two TV plays are analyzed from lens, sets, props, colors, compositions, actors, models and other aspects, and comparisons between images’characteristics modeled by image and language are carried on at the same time. And then, from the perspective of speak aside and dialogue, this paper has an analysis on different ways that two TV plays dealing with figures’language and narrator’s language, and clearly points out the differences on language characters between the novel and TV plays. At last, starting from the TV play art, this paper analyzes the affects on image building by hearing language which can not be found in the novel, such as music and sound effects, and compares the manifestation modes between the TV plays and the novel.In the end, this paper compares original novel and two versions of TV plays from the angle of implications conveyed by images. Starting from the region of subtext, on the basis of analyzing the potential implications of the language and the behavior of characters in the text, this paper makes a comparison between the1987version and2010version to see their different ways of dealing with the subtext. And starting from the art of TV images, comparative analysis on implications conveyed by images between two different versions of TV plays has been carried out.Although adaptation of literary works is long-standing, words and images being a hot issue in new audio-visual environment began in the early twenty-first century. This paper has a comparative analysis on processing modes in language and the formation of images between two TV plays, which is the basis of the comparison on loyalty and conveying. This paper also discusses the figures’behaviour in the novel and image subtexts of TV plays, and trying to study the issues such as methods of picture-words transformation and the ways that the TV plays conveys the spiritual connotation of the novel at best in a concretive level.
