C-E Bilingual Translation Of Information Focus Of Sentences In Engineering Texts

In recent years, China has made great achievements in engineering construction, arousing increasing demand for engineering text translation. The main purpose of engineering texts is to convey information. And the proper dealing with the information focuses of sentences in original texts is especially crucial. Therefore this paper will use relevant theoretical research achievements of information focus to discuss the strategies to deal with the information focuses of sentences in C-E bilingual translation of engineering texts.According to relevant theories, information focus can be divided into unmarked focus and marked focus. And the implementation approaches of information focus of English and those of Chinese have similarities and differences as well. It is required to apply different handling methods and strategies according to those similarities and differences and specific translation practice. This paper firstly introduces theoretical knowledge related to information focus to illustrate some concepts about information focus. Then this paper analyzes the features of engineering texts and its information focuses. At last, this paper uses specific translation examples to clarify that C-E bilingual translation of information focus of sentences in engineering texts can apply two handling strategies. One is that the information focuses both in the original texts and translation texts correspond each other and the other is non-corresponding. Corresponding strategy requires that the unmarked focuses in the original text should be shown as unmarked focuses in the translation text. And the marked focuses should remain the marked marks. Un-corresponding strategy requires that the information focuses in the original text should be reproduced in a proper way according to the similarities and differences of the implementation approaches of information focus of English and Chinese and the real translation situations. This strategy also requires the translation to accord with expression regulations of target language. This paper mainly talks about the un-corresponding handling of information focus in subordinative compound, complex long sentences and special sentence patterns. Through these two strategies, the translation purpose to convey the original information accurately thus can be achieved. And more qualified engineering translation texts make for the further development of urban construction in our country.
