A Comparative Analysis On Information Focus In E-C Interpretation By AI And Interpreters

In recent years,the information theory has been widely applied to the study of translation,such as the given and the new information,information structure,information focus and so on.Based on the information theory,the differences between the interpretation by AI and interpreters are discussed in the thesis in order to provide some suggestions for the future development of AI interpreting.The thesis aims at making a comparative analysis on the expression of information focus in E-C interpretation by AI and interpreters on the lexical and syntactic level.Based on the small corpuses set up in the thesis,both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis are made to find out the differences in the expression of information focus and the reasons for the differences in order to give advice to the future development of AI interpreting.Three speeches at the World Economic Forum are selected as the materials to set up a corpus which is processed in the software AntConc and qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis are made.The study shows that in terms of the expression of information focus,479 English sentences with unmarked focus are analyzed and the accuracy rate of the interpretation by the interpreters is the highest,93.53%,while the accuracy rate of the interpretation by Mr.Translator by Tencent and iFLYTEK Easy Trans 2.0 is 90.81% and 88.52%.225 English sentences with focus marker words are analyzed and the accuracy rate is of the interpretation by the interpreters is the highest,88.00% while the accuracy rate of the interpretation by Mr.Translator by Tencent and iFLYTEK Easy Trans 2.0 is 87.18% and 86.67%.Besides,123 English sentences with special English sentences to mark focus are analyzed and the accuracy rate of the interpretation by the interpreters is the highest,81.30%,while the accuracy rate of the interpretation by Mr.Translator by Tencent and iFLYTEK Easy Trans 2.0 is 71.54% and 69.11%.In English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting,as for English sentences with unmarked focus,English sentences with focus marker words and English sentences with special sentence patterns marking focus,the interpretation by interpreters are better than interpretation by AI in terms of the expression of information focus.The interpretation by AI is comparatively unemotional and not flexible enough.However,due to the great translation memory,AI interpreting software is suitable for long speeches without complex structures.The interpretation by interpreters are relatively flexible and emotional though sometimes some unimportant words are missed.In order to get better interpretation by AI or achieve the integration of interpreters and AI,the AI interpreting software can be improved if the corpus is enlarged or the speech recognition technology is improved.
