| This report is based on the consecutive interpreting service the author provided for Claremont Eco Forum in 2021.Claremont Eco Forum is one of the largest forums on ecological civilization in the world.Since 2006,the forum has drawn together a galaxy of people to explore solutions to challenges facing mankind.With the theme of ecological civilization and organic communitarianism,the 14th Claremont Eco Forum was held in May 2021 online.Taking Gile’s Effort Model for consecutive interpreting as the theoretical framework and Claremont Eco Forum consecutive interpreting as the sample,this report aims to explore how the application of the Effort Model has facilitated the interpreting process.This report discusses problem triggers including high speech density,unknown names,terminologies and external noises,language differences,and speaker factors.It then gives a detailed analysis of coping tactics the author took during the Listening and Analysis Effort,Memory and Note-taking Effort,and Production Effort to avoid mental saturation and interpreting failures.The coping tactics include using hypernyms,asking speaker for clarification,delaying response,using symbols and abbreviations,reconstruction,omission,paraphrasing,and consulting resources.This report also reviews the whole interpreting process,summarizes the author’s deficiencies in practice,and provides some suggestions and solutions.This report finds that the Effort Model inspires the author to improve his awareness to allocate and coordinate processing capacity deliberately,and thus can guide and enhance the author’s performance in practice.Meanwhile,as an explanatory tool,it cannot be regarded as a direct solution to every difficulty that arises in interpreting.Interpreters should keep learning,and improve their capability through continuous practicing and self-reflection. |
