Pre-interpretation preparation is very important for simultaneous interpretation. Experienced interpreters can perform thorough preparation after they receive an interpretation task. While junior interpreters, in many cases, often do not know how to prepare or in the case that they do, cannot prepare well. Pre-interpretation preparation requires an interpreter to understand the background knowledge and special terms, which can alleviate the burdens in the interpretation process. There are many ways of preparation, such as making a glossary, reading books relevant to the topic, on-site tour, asking PowerPoint material from the speaker or the organizer, etc. Which is the most effective one? How can one best memorize the specific terms, which is a significant aspect of preparation? The current study tries to answer these questions through experiment and analysis based on Gile’s Effort Model. The scope of the paper is confined to English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. The present paper proposes a way of preparation, namely the interpreter memorizes and understands the glossary and background knowledge through mock simultaneous interpretation activity. Through these exercises, the interpreters tend to internalize the glossary and background knowledge and alleviate the burden of interpretation.Based on the experiment and analysis, the essay has reached the following conclusions:The preparation method proposed by the essay is more effective than the traditional methods when it comes to interpreting the specific information or highly specialized information. After preparation, the fluency and accuracy of interpreters have improved when they interpret more general information.
