This thesis discusses the pre-interpretation preparation method of English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. Learning relevant vocabulary and domain knowledge is a prerequisite for carrying out a simultaneous interpretation task successfully. This thesis analyzes Gile's Effort Models and hopes to find a preparation method that can improve interpreters' available effort, so as to improve their interpretation quality. In the quantitative analysis part, the interpretive theory of translation is used to score the subjects. The interpretive theory of translation also emphasizes extra-linguistic knowledge, which underlines the importance of encyclopedia knowledge.Based on the above-mentioned theories, this thesis carries out an empirical study to verify the importance of pre-interpretation preparation and test the effectiveness of different preparation methods. Fifteen subjects are divided into three groups for a comparative study:Group A makes no preparation. Group B memorizes the new words and expressions before the experiment and Group C reads parallel text before the experiment.The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the experiment results show that pre-interpretation preparation can improve the subjects' interpretation quality, and parallel text is more effective in helping subjects to grasp information and improving their performance in accuracy, coherence, technique, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. This is because parallel text provides interpreters with relevant vocabulary and domain knowledge. Therefore, their available efforts in listening and analysis, speech production, short-term memory and coordinating tasks are improved.The author hopes to deepen interpreters' understanding of effort distribution pattern in simultaneous interpretation and raise their awareness of learning domain knowledge in the pre-interpretation preparation stage. Universities should also cultivate students' ability make pre-interpretation preparation on their own.
