As the first systematic interpretive theory in history, the Interpretive Theory of Translation has become the turning point in its study. It stands out among other concerned theories in both the Western countries and China. And it has made itself a major guiding theory for the on-site interpretation. The Interpretive Theory of Translation redefined a new interpreting procedure:the comprehension of source language, deverbalization and expressing. Based on the theory, this thesis analyzes Zhang Lu’s consecutive interpretation text of Premier Wen Jiabao on the fifth meeting of the National People’s Congress press conference with intention to illustrate how this theory is applied as well as why it is instructive and meaningful to the interpreting practice. This thesis is a translation study conducted in a way that text analyzing is combined with the Interpretive Theory of Translation. The analyzing process involves the occupational, professional and technical features in interpretation, which shows the application of the Interpretive Theory of Translation to interpretation by explaining and assessing the core content and concept. This thesis mainly proceeds from three aspects: comprehension of sense, necessary cognitive supplement and deverbalization. The three aspects are integrally connected to each other during the interpreting process. This thesis separates the Interpretive Theory of Translation into three individual parts to show the readers how this theory is applied in the process of interpreting and aims at helping the readers to learn and use it in their interpreting practices or teaching activities. The purpose is to demonstrate the instructive guidance this theory has during the process of interpretation. The analysis proves that the Interpretive Theory of Translation provides the interpreters with not only guidance at the technical level, but also career competence enhancement at the occupational level. Therefore, the present research exerts positive influence not only on its author but also on people who engage in interpreting practice theoretically and technically.
