With the increasing demand for interpreting service in the society, more andmore bilinguals and interpreting fans have begun to study translation and interpreting.Through communication, the author has discovered that a lot of beginners comeacross the same problem in the primary stage of English-Chinese consecutiveinterpreting: they try to get and memorize every word they hear in the listeningprocess and rely too much on their notes for the translation which leads to theproblem of translationese in expression. The Interpretive Theory of Translationbelieves in the communicative purpose of translation, takes the conveying of sense asthe role of the interpreter and proposes the core concept of deverbalization, whichinspires the author to solve the above problem.By using the case analysis method, the thesis analyzed the translations of twospeeches of an E-C consecutive interpreting activity (one interpreted with a transcriptand one without), and pointed out the problems in the translations and the success ofthe whole interpreting activity. The study case verifies the importance ofdeverbalization in listening comprehension and expression. In addition, it also givessome suggestions on how to carry out interpreting activities and practices in light ofthe theory, including how to prepare for a consecutive interpreting activity, how toenhance listening comprehension ability, how to practice memory and how to get ridof translationese in expression in daily practices. The author hopes to help thebeginners to clear up their confusions in their studies and give some references totheir daily interpreting practices and activities.
