This thesis is a report on the translation of the first chapter of The Valley of Amazement, the latest novel by Amy Tan, a famous Chinese American writer. The author Amy Tan created many best-selling novels, for instance, The Joy Club, The kitchen god’s wife and so on. She is also well-known for describing the subtle relationship between Mother and Daughter. This story is adapted from her grandmother’s real experience and told in the first person. It is mainly about the protagonist’s early life experience. In the period of the republic of china, as a Chinese American girl, the heroine had to travel a thousand miles from America to her mother’s motherland China because her father passed away all of a sudden. Then, she settled down in Shanghai and stared a new life quite different from her peers. The plots are intricate and the language is delicate.Thesis will be divided into four parts: Firstly, the introduction part contains the background of the project, the objective, and the significance of the project. Secondly, the study background contains the theoretical basis, the introduction of the author, the main content, the features of the source text. The skopos thories is chosen as the theoretiacal basis. Thirdly, the difficulties in translation and the translation methods part will concentrate on the translation difficulties, the preparation work and the translation methods. The difficulties lie in the translation of the scene description, the portrayals of characters and the proper expression of inner imbroglio. Fourthly, the conclusion contains the translation experience, the lessons from this translation project.
