Since2006, there is a "Chinese Language" phenomenon in the U.S. Especially the start of the AP Chinese program and the policy of the Chinese government to inform the world about Chinese language teaching. In the U.S., Chinese teaching is at a fast pace, but it is faced with three main difficulties:"not enough students are learning the Chinese language","There are not enough Chinese teachers" and "Chinese textbooks are not all the same", because in the past, teaching Chinese was not prevalent. Especially when it came to the Chinese textbook. At present there are more kinds of Chinese textbooks to choose from than before. There are not enough Chinese textbooks for U.S. students to use in America. A special Chinese textbook prepared especially for U.S. students would be appropriate. Now in the U.S., there are many kinds of Chinese textbooks, and there is no measurable standard. In the U.S., the textbook "Integrated Chinese" is very popular during the first two years of University, and in China, the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng" is the popular one in University.Because Chinese teaching has a special place in the U.S., and the Chinese textbooks made in the U.S. are different from the Chinese textbooks made in China, the excellent textbooks made in China are not welcomed into the U.S. So my graduation paper is about comparing two good textbooks "Hanyu Jiaocheng" and "Integrated Chinese". I will make mention about their design of units to study, and the design of vocabulary word lists, and the usage of texts in traditional form, and text topics, and percentage of new words per class and so on. In the "design of units to study" and design of vocabulary word lists, the textbook "Integrated Chinese" is scientifically better than the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng". In the aspect of the usage of texts in traditional form, there are not texts in traditional form in appendix of the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng", compared to the textbook "Integrated Chinese"’s. In the aspect of text topics, the text topics in the textbook "Integrated Chinese" are average in different texts; and in the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng", the text topics concentrate on "School life","Introducing oneself, Greetings","Go shopping". In the aspect of percentage of new words per class,"Integrated Chinese" words in each text are above average, compared to the words in the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng"’s; and the difference in class words is also significant, once again compared to the textbook "Hanyu Jiaocheng"’s. Yet, both textbooks use words that are outside of the "outline of Chinese Vocabulary Classes", the textbook "Integrated Chinese" has a great percentage of these words, compared to the text book "Hanyu Jiaocheng"’s.According to these different results and points between textbooks "Hanyu Jiaocheng" and "Integrated Chinese", we can get some very good ideas in preparation to write a Chinese textbook that would be suitable for American students.
