A Study On The Poems By Chen Tao In The Late-tang Dynasty

Though Chen Tao is not a great poet in the grand view garden of poetry of Tang Dynasty,he isrememberad by people because of two lines of verse.The ancient critics praised him constantly.Hewas born in the late Tang Dynasty with frequent wars and keen on official career.He failed in theexam and visited the dignitaries around,but finally only without fruit..Then he retreated and liveda civilian life.The late-Tang poetry schools showed a plentiful and colorful situation. Chen Tao, as ahumble poet, enjoyed some repuation, but never received enough attention. This paper will make asystematic research by collecting more substantial material and referencing on the results ofprevious studies, to make the stories and the poems of Chen Tao more clear. Besides,we will makesome comments on Chen Tao’s poetry, and analyze its ideological content and artistic style, inorder to make up for the blank of academic achievements in this field of study.This paper is divided into two parts. The first part mainly discusses Chen Tao and hispoetry.This part will be divided into four sections. The first section firstly carries out a detailedanalysis on the forming process of "two Chen Tao", and then teases and discriminates the relevanthistorical data;secondly,I will make a brief textual research on the origin of Chen Tao and hisworks. The second section mainly researches the poetry of Chen Tao. The first is to make acollection of the existing poetry of Chen Tao; Secondly, I will arrange the Chen Tao poetry whichcan be specifically researched year by year combining with Chen Tao’s life, in order to clear thetime of writing and writing background. In addition, there are some poems which were mistakenlycollected,or mixed with the poems of Nan-Tang Chen Tao in the works of Chen Tao. This sectionwill also identify and clear their attribution. The third section mainly analyzes Chen Tao’s poetryby explaining the ideological content and artistic style. The ideological contents, mainly includingthe following aspects: the tragic frontier tone; the pursuit in fame; the hermit ideal.Its artistic style is showing the relative complexity, compared with the poets in the Late TangDynasty. Chen Tao’s poems coexist with the rebels and the accommodation,showing a symbiosisand the difference in time. The hybrid of the poetry of Chen Tao may be one of the reasons for thisresult. But it is extremely difficult to discriminate them, which makes us still unable to get anaffirmative conclusion. Now we can only try to restore the poetry style of Chen Tao and slightlyargument according to the views of the former researchers.The second part is the annotations of Chen Tao’s poems. Because there is no special note onChen Tao’s works, this part will give a detailed, complete corrections about them,based on “TheFull poetry of Tang Dynasty”,by referencing " The essence of literature ","The unified poems ofTang-Danasty"," One hundred poems of the Tang Dynasty","The poetry collection of the easternGuangdong ","The collection of Jiangxi poems "and so on. Besides,this part will annotate theallusions and obscure words in great detail and strives to create a perfect annotation of Chen Tao’spoetry anthology.
