splendid culture. What’s more, contemporary China is a country with a fulldevelopment of cultural diversity. Not only food culture, language culture but allaspects attracted scholars from all over the world. Therefore, the translation ofculture-loaded terms became the first choice for many translators. The translation ofliterary works surely becomes the direct medium of cultural communication. Chineseculture-loaded terms are closely linked to the Chinese culture and language, thetranslation of culture-loaded terms has great significance for the spread of Chineseculture. It is also closely linked with its own survival of cultural context, so analysisof translation of culture-loaded terms and the corresponding translation strategies issignificant under the circumstance of culture communication..Translation skopos theory emerged in the1970s and originated in Germany.Skopos theory holds the view that translation is a purposeful activity. It is a kind ofcross-cultural communication activity, which should be restricted by translationpurpose. Translation purpose controls the entire translation process and is a criterionfor judging a translation. Whether the translation work can fully implement thetranslation purpose is the key point. Different from traditional translation theories, skopos theory emphasized the subjective initiative of the translator, considered thetranslation as behavior theory, but also a cross-cultural communication activity.Skopos theory has opened up a new road of translation theory.Mo Yan, as the first winner for the Nobel Prize for literature writer in China, isfamous for vernacular works which are classified as "root-searching literature" writer. His works "the Republic of Wine" caused a sensation in France and got a prize for"foreign literature". What’s more, the English translation work by famous Sinologist Howard Goldblatt is attracted by many readers and famous in the world. HowardGoldblatt, American famous Sinologist, the only translator for Mo Yan’s work. Bornin1939, he went to Taiwan to learn Chinese during the1960s. He got his PhD ofChinese literature from Indiana University. Now he is the highest position in theworld of Chinese literature among the English translators. He is rigorous and careful. He makes the translation more domestic and easy for understanding for the foreignreaders. Howard Goldblatt said:“the Republic of Wine may be the most imaginativeChinese novel I have ever read in terms of technique, and the most abundant in termsof content." Mo Yan also said “the Republic of Wine " is his lover endowed withbeauty caprice. Therefore, the work’s popularity is obvious. This thesis quoted the English version translated by Goldblatt as the languagematerials, analyses and summarizes the different types of translation strategies ofculture-loaded terms based on the skopos theory of Hans Vermeer. This thesischooses nearly69representative culture-loaded terms and sentences, mainly fromthree aspects of culture-loaded terms: the material culture, linguistic culture, ecological culture, religious culture, and social culture. Finally this thesis sums up thetranslation methods that Goldblatt chose, and analyzes its limitations caused by a lackof cultural vacancy. By analyzing the English translation of cultural terms ofGoldblatt, this thesis hopes to provide some relevant information for the translation ofliterary works.
