A Study Of E-C News Translation From The Perspective Of Functionalist Skopos Theory

With the rapid development of social economy, China, as the second largest economic entity, widely communicates with foreign countries in different fields at different levels. Among these, news report occupies an important role in the cross-cultural information exchange between the readers home and abroad. News transmission is a well-organized mass communication, and the report of the facts. As an independent category of practical writing, news report has its own distinctive characteristics. However, the E-C news translation has always been faced with great difficulties. The reasons are as follows:First, there exist some specific midget words, neologism, puns and jargons in the English journalistic lexics and the inverted pyramid structures in the English journalistic syntactic. Under the pressure of the timeliness of the news, the domestic E-C news translators have to face greater challenges. Second, news media serve the interests of a certain group of people in a specific country or nation. The ideology of news media based on the capitalist economy in the Western countries has conflicts with the ideology of news media relating to the fields such as politics, culture, religion and the like in China. When dealing with this kind of news, Chinese E-C translators should not only objectively convey the meaning of the actual news, but also prevent the penetration of the Western ideology. Nevertheless, the domestic E-C news translation has always been lack of a general guiding rule, thus making the E-C news translation very difficult.As Skopos Theory plays a crucial role in the German Functionalist Translation Theory, the author of this thesis will call this school as "Functionalist Skopos Theory" This thesis makes a study of the application of Functionalist Skopos Theory in news English. A guiding function of Skopos Theory over the E-C news translation can be illustrated as follows:In a broad sense, the translators can deal with the source text according the text typology and take the final communicative aim of the target text into consideration, so as to resolve the conflicts between the two different ideologies. In a narrow sense, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule can be used to guide the translation of vocabulary and syntax in English news, which are not in accordance with the Chinese journalese. These two rules can help make the target text coherent and acceptable to the target receivers and culture without deviating from the original text excessively.
