Poem is the most condensed art form in literature, while rhythm is one of themost essential parts in a poem. The translation of rhythm has always been fairlydifficult to handle. Though there is no perfection in the translated world because ofthe differences between English and Chinese language, translators are still trying tomake the translation perfect with many different new strategies. In this thesis, theauthor attempts to explore the transference of rhythm beauty in the translation ofEnglish poems from the angle of translator as the aesthetic subject, in the hope thatthis paper can cast new sight on poems translation and provide fresh ideas forresearchers in this field.As the aesthetic subject, translators are of vital importance in the translation ofEnglish poems. Their aesthetic perspectives, aesthetic competence and performancestranslators play in the three aesthetic stages determine the achievements they are tomake in aesthetic reproduction of translation. Aesthetic perspective signifies theaesthetic values a translator possesses in the perception and appreciation of the poeticbeauty. Aesthetic competence denotes to what extent a translator can turn his aestheticperspectives and perceptions into an artistic unit. Three aesthetic stages include theaesthetic reception, the aesthetic reproduction and the aesthetic re-creation. Andtranslators with different identities will give different performances in the process oftranslation since they hold different opinions on aesthetics. Poet translators lay moreemphasis on aesthetic values and appreciation while researcher translators on the overall reception and maximum colonization.As an aim to apply aesthetic subject to the study of the transference of rhythmbeauty in the translation of English poems, the present thesis has three focuses:(a) toanalyze various practices by translators of different identities;(b) to explain reasonswhy translators provide different productions on rhythm beauty of the same originalfrom the point of aesthetics;(c) to list contributions and aims both poet translators andresearcher translators make to the transference of beauty rhythm in the translation ofEnglish poems and contributive enlightenment they make to the production ofChinese poems.
