| The ancient Chinese poem is an artistic form with a high sense of aesthetic taste. It is characterized by the unique charm in terms of its content, form and rhythm. A piece of translated work of a Chinese poem should retain its original artistic beauty. One of its artistic features is the dynamic beauty and static beauty which are interwoven with each other to create a special flavor. A comprehensive and systemic study is yet needed as to the significance of the reproduction of this feature in translation and how to realize it.This paper discusses how important it is for a translator to faithfully reconstruct the original flavor of the aesthetic mood ("yijing") of a poem. It studies the specific implication of static and dynamic beauty and puts forward that this beauty contributes to this overall aesthetic mood, which naturally leads to the view that an effective representation of this kind of beauty is indispensable for a successful verse translation.Unlike previous research, it selects large samples of different translated versions of some representative works which are appreciated, compared, analyzed and evaluated from three linguistic perspectives. In wording it considers the effect of different choice of words on conveying static or dynamic sense. In sentence-building, it probes into the implication of the six process clauses based on a functional analysis of English. In the choice of tense and aspect, it studies several patterns that are commonly used in verse translation. It has done a detailed and comprehensive study in hopes of providing a new angle to evaluate a piece of verse translation and of coming up with some general rules and methods concerning how to handle the static and dynamic beauty in verse translation, thus providing reference and guidance for the future translation of the ancient Chinese poems.
