Prose is famous for its profound artistic conception, rich language and properimagination. The Artistic Conception is the essence of prose, at the meantime, the keyelement to guarantee a successful translation. According to Aesthetics of Reception,the better transference of the artistic conception contributes to readers’ use of theirown fancy to fill in the “gaps” and the “indeterminacy” which are left by the author,thus make the better fusion of the horizon of expectations with the author. HenryDavid Thoreau writes his masterpiece Walden in1854, which can be regarded as oneof the most classical literary works in world literature history since it was publishedand the book was loved by readers around the world for its rich language, vividexpressions, and thoughtful ideas. Therefore, the reconstruction of the artisticconception in the prose, as a key factor in translation, plays a significant role inspreading the book to the world.Taking Xu Chi’s version of Walden as a sample, the thesis emphasizes on findingout the key factors that affect the translation process and making proper translationstrategies to fulfill the aesthetic expectations of the target readers due to theimportance of the reconstruction of the artistic conception in prose translation.Therefore, the approaches to reconstruct the artistic conception in the prose translationare quite important for translators to grasp. Under the guidance of Aesthetics ofReception, preservation, empathy of emotions, and conversion are regarded as mainmethods to deal with the artistic conception during the process of translation. No matter what approaches translators adopt, the supreme task is to help readersunderstand the deep meaning that lies in the lines in order to realize the reconstructionof the artistic conception in the prose. The thesis discusses the factors that affect thereconstruction of the artistic conception and the choices of the suitable strategies, inthe hope to provide a new perspective to prose translation study.
