A Study Of The Conversion From The Static To The Dynamic State In The Chinese Translation Of English For Science And Technology

Proceeding from an analysis of English for science and technology (EST) featured with being static in expression as exemplified by The Geology of the Ndola and Bwana Mkubwa Areas, the thesis focuses on the types and application of the translation technique of conversion from the static to the dynamic state in the Chinese translation of EST on the basis of linguistics and translation studies.The source language text The Geology of the Ndola and Bwana Mkubwa Areas, mostly a scientific and technological introduction to the geology in Ndola and Bwana Mkubuwa, is featured with being static in expression, that is, nominalization, the use of adjectives and adverbs to express dynamic meanings, and preposition preponderance.Different from English, Chinese which uses verbs more frequently tends to be dynamic in expression; it is dynamic in that it uses more verbs in a single sentence, repeating them or employing them as different constituents, a feature which needs to be shown clearly in translation from EST into Chinese. To this end, the static expressions embodying action in the original are generally converted into dynamic structures in conformity with Chinese expression, which is also an important translation principle advocated by scholars in the history of translation studies.
