The Ju-Lin Wai-Shih has been the first good satire novel in the history of literature in China. It once became a hotspot of scholars in the aspects of its character, idea, irony and the comparative study of other works and so on, while the linguistic research were relatively few. In fact, the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih is also significant in linguistics. Because its language is in the transition stage of the classical to vernacular Chinese, to a certain extent, it can help understand the characteristics of the development in Chinese and realize the present and prospect of the Chinese development to better grasp the modern Chinese. At present, the vocabulary study of the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih is not comprehensive enough, for example, the colloquial words have larger research space and value. In this article, the author selects8colloquial words from the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih, such as Xiao (including the words containing the morpheme of Xiao), Ti, Jing (including the words containing the morpheme of Jing), Luo Hou, Mai, Gong Xi, Dao Li, Ri (the words containing the morpheme of Ri) and so on. All the sentences containing each word in the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih are collected through electronic search and artificial proofreading. Each word is described qualitatively and statically, such as each sememe and its frequency is concluded, each sememe is understood referring to the example sentences and the sememe still commonly used in modern Chinese is briefly analyzed and so on. In longitudinal comparison with Water Margin and modern Chinese, a generalized analysis is made in the aspects of sememe and grammar. In terms of synchronic comparison, the similarities and differences of the sememe and grammar is summarized between the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih and A Dream of Red Mansions that is another contemporary great work. By searching the electronic text and consulting reference books, the examples in the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih and meanings in the reference books are all listed and analyzed in the longitudinal and synchronic aspect. The final summary about this8colloquial words in Water Margin, the Ju-Lin Wai-Shih, A Dream of Red Mansions and modern Chinese is as follows:The scope of the sememe is larger or smaller or overlapping, which is expected to lay a preliminary foundation for the study of modern Chinese vocabulary or even the development of the Chinese history.
