Bianwen Words And Phrases In Dynasty

Chinese Colloquial words, those newly-born words or fully-grown ones with their meanings having changed, once prevailed among spoken languages of different social strata in history. The historical era from the Tang to the Wudai Dynasty is of significant importance to the history of the evolution of Colloquial words, and Dunhuang narrative literature is the gathering place of the Colloquial words during not only this very period but the beginning of the Song Dynasty as well, hence its indispensability to ChineseColloquial-word study. Therefore, the Colloquial words in Dunhuang narrative literature have considerable value in Colloquialword research of not only the Tang-to-Wudai period but also other historical eras. Moreover, they are of great significance to the study on the history of Chinese words, and to the building of a scientific system of lexicologial history as well as the linguistic history of the Chinese language. Although great achievements have been made in recent years, such as Jiang Lihong's Explanation for Words in Dunhuang Narrative Literature and A Dictionary for the Language in Dunhuang Documents, Huang Zheng and Zhang Yongquan's Collation and Annotation to Dunhuang Narrative Literature, and a lot of papers published in various academic journals, there are still many Colloquial words with their meanings unknown that are worth more thorough researches. In light of this, this paper attempts to make a philological explanation for 34- Colloquial words in Dunhuang narrative literature which are divided into 19 groups through employing such methods as analyzing and inducing, seeking synonyms or ardnyms according to the mutual annotation or different words expressing the same meaning, and exploring their etymologies. The author manages to find out the origins of these words from the perspective of the developmental history of Chinese words, and to present a further description for the historical track along which the meanings of these words develop. Another goal of this thesis is to supplement the present dictionaries with some meanings of certain words or even words which fail to be collected, to ccrrect some mistakes in these dictionaries or other relevant works, to show the influence of the languages of Buddhist documents on that of Dunhuang documents, and eventually to enlighten people as to the study on the development of the common-core words in Chinese as well as the lexicological history of the Chinese language.
