Patrick Hanan, New Zealand, He is a professor at the university of harvard. In the study of Chinese classical literature,he is one of the most effective overseas Sinologist.In1950,he was admitted to the university of London,began to study Chinese literature.His doctoral thesis put"Chin Ping Mei"as the research object.Then,Hanan began to focuses on the study of Vernacular Chinese Fiction, the research of the Qing dynasty scholar——li yu,the research of Modern Chinese Novel, especially the romance novels in late Qing dynasty.The first chapter mainly introduces Hanan narratology method of Chinese classical literature. Hanan put the early vernacular short story as a kind of "genre",from narrative mode,narrative structure,character type three aspects to analyze the early vernacular short story.As a kind of "genre", the early vernacular short story has its own characteristics,it has unique development track. In the problem of fictional narrative,Hanan created his own narrative analysis method——the six levels of literature analysis,he use this analysis method to discusses the issue of Chinese vernacular novel narrative. In addition, which analyze the study of novel "narrator" is also the focus in this chapter.The secend chapter mainly introduces Hanan textology method of Chinese classical literature.He has a textology method which is read the text carefully, master the first-hand information. because of his discovered and used, there are many literatures begin to know by academic circles. After read a large number of Chinese classical novels,Hanan found that the early vernacular novels has a certain style characteristics, especially in the area of the dialogue. As a result, he put forward a new analysis method named"style criteria",to infer that those who unable to determined the date precisely of novels and their authors. The method of style criteria"can be regarded as a feasible way to supplement the shortage of materials textology.In the third chapter,there are two case studies——the research of Chin Ping Mei"and the research of "Li Yu", integrate the above all kinds of Hanan’s research methods,analyze how to use his theoretical achievements in his studies of specific text.The conclusion discusses the gain and loss of Hanan’s methods.the studies of Sinology is a significant academic force for domestic scholars.They are different research methods and the problems of consciousness,that will provide us some new ways to research Chinese classical literature. For Chinese literature critics, learn from Sinology can make us form new research perspectives and new spaces for research.
