Translation is an activity of rendering a source language text into the target language, as well as a bridge of cultural communication. Nowadays, with the expansion of reform and opening-up of China, and the increasing widespread of cultural exchanges, translation has become more and more important. Foreign literary works, which is a significant medium of cultural exchange, plays a vital role promoting the development and prosperity of Chinese culture. So the translation of these literary works is of great importance. Fiction, as a common form in literature, is widely enjoyed by readers. In recent years, an increasing number of English fictions are being introduced to Chinese readers, so the translation of these fictions is also being widely concerned.The thesis is a case study based on the translation of two English fictions:Soldier’s Joy and Alice in Dairyland. It illustrates the importance of the application of communicative translation theory in English fiction translation by analyzing the specific problems and relevant translation techniques.The thesis comprises five parts. The first part describes the status quo, the content and the significance of the task. The second part analyzes the whole task process, which is divided into three stages:preparing, translating and summarizing. The third part introduces the theoretical foundation of this thesis, that is the communicative translation theory proposed by Peter·Newmark. The fourth part is the case study, which elaborates the analysis of specific translation issues and relevant solutions. The fifth part summarizes the findings of the study.In a word, the research on the application of communicative translation theory in English fiction translation is of great value. The case study is conducted with a view to providing some useful instructions on English fiction translation. It is hoped that more and more translators could participate in literary translation.
