| This translation report project on Realizing the Power of Professional Learningwas written by Helen Timperley, a professor from the New Zealand Ministry ofEducation at the University of Auckland, of which Chapter1From ProfessionalDevelopment to Professional Learning and Chapter2Finding Out About Students arethe source text. Chapter1outlines concerns about the lack of impact of currentprofessional development provision and describes the shifts in thinking required toaddress those concerns. In Chapter2, we have a cycle of inquiry that has students asthe touchstone and is focused on building professional knowledge and improvementsin practice. Then the first dimension of the inquiry and knowledge-building cycle isgiven. Professional learning opportunity results in better outcomes for students.Students need some kinds of knowledge and skills to meet their goals. Thecommunicative translation theory established by Peter Newmark lays the theoreticalfoundation of this paper. Communicative translation attaches importance to recipients’understandings and responses. Translators are required to reorganize the languagestructure so as to produce accurate and fluent translations. The communicativetranslation theory just meets the translation requirements of this style, which servesthe target readers and shifts foreign language composition to their own language andculture as much as possible. This report is divided into four parts. Part one introducesthe background, aim, significance and structure of the translation project. Part two isthe background of the source text, including the author introduction, main contentsand the analysis of the source text. Part three is about translation difficulties andmethods, analyzing the major problems revealed in the process of translation andelaborating preparation work, followed by detailed translation approaches which include amplification and omission,conversion from English nouns and prepositionsto Chinese verbs,splitting, ironically understatement. Part four serves as theconclusion of the translation report. It summarizes the lessons and experience drawnfrom the translating process and explains problems to be resolved. |
