Study On Lan Renzhe As A Translator

The cultural turn in translation studies in the West after the1970s has beenexpanding research areas and bringing about new dimensions and approaches. Thecultural turn finds translators and translator’s subjectivities as well as aesthetictendencies have become necessary and important research subjects for translationresearchers. As the subject of translation, translators contribute greatly to the translationcause, and translation practice and views of these translators, especially thoseaccomplished translators are doubtless a valuable heritage which deserves to be studied.Therefore, this thesis chooses to study on Lan Renzhe as a translator in that he boastsabundant translation works with high quality and he shares identities of teacher, scholarand translator while his identity of translator is usually neglected.The thesis firstly combs the research process of and achievements gained ontranslator studies in China, and existing research on Mr Lan Renzhe as a translator.Then, guided under the theoretical framework of DTS, studies are conducted on Mr Lanfrom a macro perspective–the historical and cultural context. Once a teacher in SISU,Mr Lan utilizes spare time to translate, producing abundant translation works, each ofwhich is provided with preface written by himself. Emphasizing on research andtranslation, Mr Lan gains a better understanding on the original text, and his translationworks are widely complimented. His choice of source text is largely related to thehistorical and cultural background, his own consideration and preference, and thepublishing houses. He is a pioneer in translation practice, adopts a responsible andearnest attitude towards translation practice, and attaches great importance to the qualityof translation. Besides translation practice, Mr Lan holds his own views on translation.His translation views are scattered in the theses and preface he wrote. Furthermore, twotranslation works of Mr. Lan–one is Selected Poems of Thomas Hardy; the other isAugust in Light. They are selected as supplementary materials to examine his translationviews illustrated above and further expound his translation strategy, language style, diction and so on with examples listed. It can be seen that his language are simple andunadorned, trying to restore the aesthetic beauty and artistic quality of the original.This thesis studies on Lan Renzhe as a translator from two angles–his translationpractice and translation views, trying to reveal and confirm his identity as a translator, toexplain the reason why he achieves success in translation. Mr. Lan boasts a largenumber of translation works, and his translation views, though not systematically, guidehis translation practice. This thesis hopes that study on such a translator could enrichChinese translation history and set a good example for later translators.
