A Case Study Of An English Version Of Ba Jin’s Jia From The Perspective Of Translators’ Subjectivity

Following a general review of the development of translators’ status and subjectivity at home and abroad,this paper explores the assumptions that inform the concept of translators’ subjectivity in the light of the Hermeneutic Theory,the Manipulative Theory,Reception Aesthetics Theory and the Skopos Theory.Within such a framework,the paper subjects an English version of Ba Jin’s Jia to an examination in reference to translators’subjectivity.The study finds five factors influencing translators’ subjectivity in this case,namely patrons,cultural awareness,translation goals,audience awareness and personal experiences,and translator Sidney Shapiro made full use of five translation strategies in the process of translating Ba Jin’s Jia,including literal translation with annotation,transliteration with annotation,flexible free translation,skillful deletion and shift of perspective.The purpose of the study is to shed more light on the translation of Ba Jin’s Jia,to push for greater participation by TS scholars in this project,and to encourage translators to give full play to their subjectivity in translating Chinese literature.
