A Report On The Translation Of Cognitive Load In Simultaneous Interpreting Existing Theories-New Models

This is a translation project report on “Cognitive Load in SimultaneousInterpreting Existing Theories—New Models” by Kilian G. Seeber who is aprofessor of ETI and whose study mainly focuses on the cognitive part of languageprocess especially on the anticipation and working memory in simultaneousinterpreting. This paper was firstly published in Interpreting, a globally prestigiousjournal on translation and interpreting. In the paper, the author aims at describing andgraphically illustrating the amount of cognitive load generated during thesimultaneous interpretation of structurally different languages based on theoriesdeveloped and evidence gathered in cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics.The current translation for Cognitive Load in Simultaneous InterpretingExisting Theories—New Models, based on the detailed analysis of the languagecharacteristics of the original text and in light of the fact that the translation is anon-literary translation, is done under the guidance of the Skopo Theory andelaborates on the translation methods and skills adopted with the help of examples.This report consists of four chapters: CHAPTER ONE is the translation projectdescription, including project background, objectives and significance. CHAPTERTWO is the research background including the introduction of Skopo theory which isthe theoretical guidance for this project and background information about the author,the main contents of the source text and the characteristics of the source text.CHAPTER THREE is about translation difficulties and methods. The difficulties liein the understanding of the graphs in the paper and the translation of someterminologies, proper nouns and long and difficult sentences. The methods includeconversion, changing the voice, amplification and splitting. CHAPTER FOURconcludes with the lessons and unresolved problems in the translation project.
