Tu Long was a renowned figure regarded as litterateur and connoisseurin the later period of Ming dynasty. The plenty of books he wrote have profoundinfluence on later generations. There were successive scholars studied and evaluatedhis writings and ideologies. Currently, the study about Tu Long places emphasis onthe field of Buddhism, Poems and Traditional Chinese Opera, etc. Because of thestudying of decoration aspect are just in a certain condition of preliminary stage, sothat there are very few articles about decoration study. Tu Long’s decoration thoughtmostly can be reflected from one of his famous book called Superfluous Things. Thisbook was divided into four volumes, expressly described different implements whichliterati would use in studying or normal life in later period of Ming dynasty,including rubbing inscription, lyre-playing, chess, calligraphy, painting, refinedplaything and costume, etc. He also made specific comments and recommendationsabout these implements.This paper will analyze the decoration concepts and thoughts, aesthetic tastes,and its important influences on later generations from the description of theseimplements in his famed book Superfluous Things. We are looking forward tofinding some valued enlightenments to contemporary era of decoration art andconcept. The main content of the this paper can be divided into following parts: Thefirst part, is a brief introduction, will introduce the subject matter which including theconcept of Superfluous Things, existing studying literatures and papers, key anddifficult points of this paper; The second part is a particular analysis towards thereference of decoration implements styles and features from Superfluous Things,inthe way of Tu Long’s emotions’ devotion to decoration implements as well as hisbasic decoration thoughts throughout the book’s context characteristics, especially ofthe background of his life and this book’s origin; The third part is a thoroughdiscussion of decoration concepts of Tu Long and the representative scholars of late Ming dynasty; At last, the paper will summarize and analyze the value and influenceof Tu Long and his decoration concepts from Superfluous Things. Also, it willabsorb valuable enlightenment to decoration concept of contemporary era from thisfamed book. Only under the guidence of the decorating idea oflocalization,nationalization and the sense of of era can Chinese decorating designsestablish its own decorating ideas with Chinese characteristic. This idea can creatworkmanship with fittable, terse and elegant and delightful sense of high quality.
