Foreign image research is an very important of all the study on Eileen Chang. Eileen Chang is a famous writer in the history of modern Chinese literature and she has close relationship with foreign countries. She was born in a family with both Chinese and Western atmosphere. She had also received private traditional education in family and school education in western style. So she has a dual cultural background. As a writer lived a long time in the colonial and semi colonial concession cities, she read a lot of foreign literature works and wrote with both Chinese and English. The exotic image in she’s literature works have an obvious self-shaping nature. By using the method of image study in comparative literature, this paper is based on how different cultures look at each other, and research on how the exotic image in Eileen Chang’s works was imagined and shaped In the interactive relationship between the self and the other, native and foreign, Then further grasps the foreign land image the characteristic and the cultural attribute.Besides the introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of four parts. The first part:focuses on the theoretical foundation for the shaping of Eileen Chang the exotic image. On the basis of describe the image theory in comparative literature, this part rely on the personal and social imagination theory, combine with the cultural background, respectively from the individual imagination and social collective imagination these in two dimensions, founding the theoretical basis for shaping the Eileen Chang’s foreign image. The internal analysis is at first. According to Eileen Chang’s own life experience and the experience of reading, reveals the dual perspective of looking both native and exotic which comes from her bilingual cultural background. Then from the external analysis, analysis of two aspects of social collective imagination:Chinese exotic imagination and the contemporary genre writers’foreign imagination which were concerned by Eileen Chang, in order to explore the possible influences of Eileen Chang’s creation and describe on foreign image. The second part:focuses on the types, find out the features and cultural characterization of Eileen Chang’s foreign image. Treating cultural review on each other as the breakthrough point, combined with the specific text analysis, Eileen Chang’s foreign image are divided into three types-the colonial city image, exotic characters and social life image. On the basis of the relationship between the self and the other, native and foreign review, comprehensively and systematically elaborated the process of how Eileen Chang’s three kinds of exotic image are imagined and shaped, to grasp the image characteristics and cultural representation. The foreign image of Eileen Chang is not just simple copy and description for the other, but the mutual projection of exotic culture. As a creator of foreign image, in the shaping of the foreign image is also a self review and reflection for Eileen Chang. Putting some cultural information she owned and added in the other body, and conveying some kind of the self-image. The third part focuses on shaping the image of Eileen Chang attitude, i.e. the value orientation. The exotic image of Eileen Chang reflects the interaction between self and other, native and foreign. But behind it implies the ideological motivation of exotic image creator. On the one hand, basing on the dissimilarity between native and exotic, through specific analysis of Eileen Chang’s native people’s attitudes towards the exotic, which includes self hating frenzy on the other and the cultural identity dilemma.To reveal the ideology guiding role in cultural confrontation. On the other hand, we should focus on the universal human survival circumstances’ similarities.Through the analysis of Eileen Chang’s characters which live under the weight of the survival and the toughness of women’s lives, revealing the universal value behind the convergence self and others. The fourth part: summarize the full text, focuses on the significant function of the study of Eileen Chang’s foreign image, which are deepening the research on Eileen Chang and creating implications on the research of Chinese contemporary Imagology.
