The Taoist Canon: A Historical Companion to the Daozang (Hereinafter refers to as The Companion to the Daozang),co-edited by the world famous sinologists Kristofer Schipper and Franciscus Verellen, was published by University of Chicago Press in2005. The successful publication of The Companion to the Daozang is regarded as one of the most important events and a milestone in the field of Taoism studies. Chinese Translation of this three-volume works is of great significance for Chinese scholars to be better informed of the latest development of Chinese Taoism studies in the western world.The author was fortunate enough to participate in the2011National Social Science Fundation Project, entitled "Translation and Research of The Taoist Canon:A Historical Companion to the Daozang", and translated some parts of first volume of this book from English to Chinese. The subject of this translation report is to summarize and reflect on this translation practice. With ample examples, this report analyzes the content features, technical terms, traditional Chinese style and verification of the content during the translation process.This translation report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to this translation practice, including the background of the translation practice, authors and contents of The Companion to the Daozang, and the whole structure of this translation report. The second chapter, based on the translation practice, describes the translation task and specific requirements of the project. The third chapter analyzes specific Taoist texts, illustrates problems and difficulties during the translation process and the corresponding translation solutions of the author. The forth chapter is the reflection on this translation practice. The author hopes that it will be of some help for future translation practice and MTI teaching and studying.
