This is a translation report on A Companion to19thCentury America published byBlakewell Publisher in2001. This book is a collection of essays, which is edited byWilliam L. Barner, a historian professor in America. The whole collection consists ofsix parts and the translator chooses the first two chapters of the sixth part. The chosentwo parts introduces the19thcentury America from two areas of communicationrevolution and religion, showing the unique perspectives to America. Historical sciencethesis belongs to informative text, whose translation should accurately provide the maincontent of the thesis and accord with the objective and exact language style. During thetranslation, translator chooses skopos theory as its theoretical guidance, obeys its threerules and concludes the translation methods in historical science thesis such as wordconversion, supplementary information, extension of word meaning and splitting, thusincreasing the readability and fidelity of the target text. In that way, the translation textobeys the habits of target language and expresses the true meaning of the source text.The final part summarizes this translation report and concludes some experience. Thispaper aims to provide some ways to solve the difficulties in historical science thesis.
