Hence the translation of English T.V. series title is particularly important in this respect. As the title translation is one form of cross-cultural itself, this work is facing severe challenges. How to attract the audience’s attention straight to the point, and retain goals of disseminating information, entertainment and obtaining desired benefits, is a priority for each T.V. series title translator. In this thesis, the English T.V. series are mainly from U.S., and there are three types of them: soap operas, sitcoms and drama. They are set for audience from different ages, different walks of life and status, many of them are popular with all ages. Prior to attract audiences, the difficulty of translating the titles arose, so the translators need to operate the process of translation in corresponding theoretical guidance, and "functional equivalence" theory is undoubtedly the most practical translation theory of T.V. series title translation.Since television is also one cross-cultural carrier, then it’s a difficulty to truthfully and equivalently reflect source language audiences’reaction to source T.V. series title in target language audiences’ reaction to target T.V. series title in the process of translation, and meet agreed reaction of both audience. In this regard, the author get inspiration from Nida’s" functional equivalence" theory, and take this theory as a reference to the guiding principles to use and techniques to choose from in T.V. series title translation. To adequately address the perspective of this thesis, the author will select representative cases of Chinese translation of English T.V. series titles, prove and make a conclusion according to the requirements of the "functional equivalence" theory that T.V. series title translation should be audience-centered, and take principles as semantic equivalence, pragmatic equivalence and creative equivalence, and techniques as transliteration, literal translation, liberal translation and adaptation to complete the artistic re-creation of T.V. series title.
