Translation Strategies On Long English Sentences From The Perspective Of Syntactic Differences

It is always considered difficult for translators to translate long English sentences into Chinese. English and Chinese, from two language families, are substantially different at syntactic level. For example, English sentences are hypotaxis with information focus at the front of the sentence, while Chinese ones are parataxis with focus at the end. They are also different in word order. The differences mentioned above cause some language barriers for translators when they translate long English sentences into Chinese. Therefore, translators should learn more about syntactic differences between the two languages and some translation strategies that can help them better deal with long English sentences. Based on the translation of The Voyage Out, this thesis aims to explore translation strategies on long English sentences from the perspective of syntactic differences. In general, translators should keep a natural flow of the translated text instead of being bound by the English sentence structures. Specifically, the common translation strategies on long English sentences include embedding, cutting, shifting and splitting, which are based on syntactic differences.
