Social science is an important dimension in human spiritual world. It plays anindispensable role on improving the level of human mind and guiding human values.Because there is a large gap between China and the West in the field of social science,as a necessary measure, the translation of social science literature is especiallyimportant, which can introduce advanced social science knowledge from the West andimprove the development of social science in China at the moment. This is a translation practice report with social science literature. The translationtext is Early Learning and Development, which is on the field of early childhoodeducation. This translation practice is English to Chinese. According to therequirement of translation practice report, the report chooses chapters1and2as theanalytical texts. In the process of translation, three main problems are summarized bythe writer, which are in parts of speech between source language and target languageis non-equivalence, language structure between source language and target languageis different and rank deviation happens between source language and target language.Furthermore, the thesis discusses the solution to these problems by adopting JohnCatford’s category shift. Four translation methods are used in the translation practice:verbalization in class shift of diction, shift between active voice and passive voice, adverbializing the attributive clause and division in translation of prepositionalphrases, in order to solve three main problems in process of translation and effectivelyimprove the quality of translation.
