With the rapid growth of globalization and China’s deepeningreform and opening up to the outside world, China has become muchmore closely related to the world and people pay more and more attentionto Chinese-English legal translation. Up until now, most researches aredone on the micro level of lexicon, sentence and text. The thesis conductsa study of legal translation from the perspective of functionalisttranslation theory which is expected to shed new light on the research. The thesis holds that legal texts belong to applied texts and legaltranslation belongs to pragmatic translation. Therefore, the form andcontent of the source text should be subject to the communicativefunction and goal of the target text. So it is believed that functionalisttranslation theory can provide practical and viable guidance forChinese-English legal translation from the perspective of text typology.Through functionalist approach, the thesis holds that legal translationshould follow the principles of preciseness, conciseness andprofessionalism, and adopt the strategies of addition, omission, conversion of parts of speech and conversion of statement and so on.Functionalist translation theory can guide legal translation for translationprinciples at the macro level and for translation techniques at the microlevel. It is hoped that under the guidance of functionalist translation theory, translators can grasp the translation principles and techniques andproduce target texts of high quality.
