Yao Mian, Zhuangyuan (Number One Scholar) of the Southern Song Dynasty in1253, had his <Fifty Volumes of Xue PO’s Collected Works> handed down from ancient times. Both his personality and literature creation are complimented by scholars of contemporary and later eras. Though outstanding literary achievements had been obtained by Yao Mian, up to now, research on his works is still a gap that needs to be filled in. The present paper attempts to restore Yao Mian himself by regarding his poetries as the object of the study. The contents of this paper roughly consist of three sections, that’s introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.In the first section, the introduction part, the research status of Yao Mian’s works and the significance of this paper are mainly introduced.In the second section, the body paragraphs, are composed of five chapters. In chapter one, it firstly focuses on Yao Mian’s lifetime and friendship, and then analyzes his most fundamental ideology: Neo-Confucianism, by combining his literature works. In chapter two, Yao Mian’s correct poetry-reading methods like "the poetry expresses one’s will" and "thorough and clear mind in understanding poem" are summarized through the combination of his poetries. As well, the poetic thoughts of "what matters in poetry lies in its naturality" and "poetry doesn’t spread because of others’preface" are summed up.In chapter three and chapter four, the original text is interpreted and Yao Mian’s poetries are classified into categories like pastoral and landscape, chants of objects and histories, inscriptions and dedications. In addition, the artistic features of his poetries are generalized. In chapter five, by means of analyzing the relation among Yao Mian’s poetries, school of Jiangxi poetry and school of Jianghu poetry, this part explores the origin of Yao’s poetry and ascertains its status and influence in literacy circles.In the last section, the conclusion part, the reasons why Yao Mian is neglected are explored, and then appraisal and positioning should be provided objectively and fairly.
