Different from general literary translation, the subtitle translation featuresinstantaneity, colloquialism and is bounded by time and space. And it concerns the sceneand the tone and characteristic of actors or actresses. All these determine strategies of filmsubtitle translation. Receiving seven Oscar nominations, The Showshank Redemption hasproven its incredible magnetism and gained great amount of popularity, for example, inChina. This report focuses on analyzing the translation of The Showshank Redemption, ofwhich the key point lies in how to use adequate and fluent words to express the originaldialogues and make the target language audiences feel the same way as the originallanguage audiences do. In this sense, it is consistent with Nida’s Functional Equivalence.Therefore, this report,under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence,deploys suchstrategies as deduction, replacement, and adaptation to provide ways of dialoguetranslation in films. At last, the author believes thatdialogue translation requires fullyunderstanding of the film, in which understanding words or sentences is the first step andfinding a way to show speaker’s character is far more important.Only by taking thecharacteristics of actors or actresses into account can we reveal the original film’s glamor.
